Like their neighbours in Poland, the designers of the Czech Republic, free from commercial constraints and enjoying far greater artistic freedom than their Western counterparts, treated film poster design as an art form. The result is an immensely powerful, wildly original and beautiful body of work.

Czech Film Posters, Planet of the Apes, Stolen Kisses and Une Femme Douce Nezna

At Orson & Welles we are proud to have some of the finest in our collection. Some of our favourites include Vratislav Hlavatý's iconic Planet of the Apes poster giving off some serious Che Guevara-esque vibes, the beautiful Stolen Kisses designed by Karel Machalek and, arguably the most important Czech poster, Olga Poláčková-Vyleťalová's Une Femme Douce which bagged the Cannes Grand Prix for best poster in 1973.

Czech Film Posters, Barbarella, The Birds and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

Other highlights in the collection include Karel Saudek’s fabulously apt Barbarella comic book style design, Josef Vyletal’s wonderfully surreal design for Hitchcock’s The Birds and Karel Vaca's simple but highly effective design for Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
